5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is the immediate precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. 5-HTP as a dietary supplement is produced from an extraction of the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia.
5-HTP is an amino acid and an intermediate metabolite in the conversion of L-tryptophan to serotonin. L-tryptophan is also a major precursor in the endogenous production of niacin and melatonin; however, 5-HTP does not play a part in this production. Rather, when it is administered, it is rapidly absorbed in most body tissues, including the brain, where it is converted to serotonin, bypassing the conversion step needed with L-tryptophan. (1)
