The beneficial effects of vitamin C on the immune system are well established and include enhanced phagocytosis by white blood cells, increased immune globulin production, and stimulation of lymphocyte (one type of white blood cell) production when exposed to foreign substances.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is one of the most well known nutrients worldwide. Such recognition is deserved, considering its role in nutritional biochemistry. Not only is vitamin C a key antioxidant, protecting cells throughout the body from free radical damage, this water-soluble vitamin serves as a cofactor in the synthesis of important neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and norepinephrine, and plays an integral role in the production of cellular energy. Vitamin C is essential for proper metabolism of carbohydrates and synthesis of fats and proteins. It helps break down cholesterol and also helps maintain healthy immune function. Vitamin C promotes wound healing because it is a cofactor for the synthesis of collagen and other connective tissue components.

Echinacea is well known in traditional botanical medicine for its benefit to the immune system. Studies have demonstrated Echinacea's efficacy in activating natural killer (NK) cells and increasing interferon levels. Echinacea also inhibits hyaluronidase, secreted by a variety of pathogenic invading organisms, thereby preventing spread of the invading organism.

Baptisia (wild indigo) is an herb often used in combination with Echinacea to support a healthy respiratory tract and lymphatic system.

Hesperidin methyl chalcone is a water-soluble bioflavonoid with potent antioxidant properties that increases intracellular levels of vitamin C.

Thorne Research has blended these key elements together to create Synergisti-C, an effective mixture of vitamin C with botanicals and flavonoids for comprehensive, year-round support of the immune system.
