Glycation in Metabolic Syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes and Aging
Posted by Ralph Sanchez, L.Ac., CNS, D.Hom. on 11/6/2011 to Type 2 Diabetes/Metabolic Syndrome
Elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia) is associated with Metabolic Syndrome, Type 2 Diabetes and aging. Chronic elevations of blood sugar leads to a process known as glycation. Glycation refers to the process whereby sugar molecules in the blood and in the cells chemically bond to proteins and DNA in the body. These glycated proteins eventually form what are known as advanced glycation end products, also known as AGE compounds (AGEs). AGEs are a fitting acronym as these compounds activate the immune system, resulting in the inflammation and tissue damage associated with accelerated aging and diabetes.
